Plus Size Lingerie

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

If you struggle to find decent plus sized lingerie you are not alone! It’s tough, and there are a growing number of women in the size 16 and above camp struggling with exactly the same thing. If you’re one of those ladies then this article is just for you.

For years anyone over a size 16 has had it pretty hard. Despite the majority of women being a size 16 or over, it’s only been in recent years that plus size clothing has started to become readily available, both on the high street and from online stores. It does seem to me that retailers are finally waking up to the opportunity/market… but why has it taken so darn long!

Plus size women certainly have more to contend with when it comes to picking out suitable lingerie, so here are a few tips to help you on your way:

First of all, make sure you get a bra that fits – get professionally fitted. It may sound obvious but if you have a larger cup size then it’s important to avoid common afflictions like unsightly lumps and bumps where you overspill the cup, or red marks where straps dig into your skin because the bra is too tight. Make sure you get a proper fitting and determine your proper size.

Next, it’s important to check that you’re getting the right support. There are several lingerie lines, both from main high street retailers and online stores, which are specially designed for ladies with larger busts and offer details like wider straps and underwiring for extra support – very necessary!

The most important thing however, regardless of whether it’s plus size lingerie or any other size, is to pick something that makes you feel good. Plus size lingerie isn’t just practical anymore; if you look carefully it can also be pretty too. Look for elegant materials like silk, satin and lace and know that you’ll look just as good with your clothes off as you do when they’re on! You don’t have to just stick to basic black, white and nude either; why not pick some vibrant sexy colours such as red or a deep purple.

Getting the Most Out of Your Lingerie

We all know it’s the first thing you put on in the morning and the last thing you take off at night; so it’s essential that your lingerie is the correct size and fit and is properly cared for!

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting who gave me three great lingerie tips. What a fabulous insight and now I’m delighted to share this expert advice with you

“Are you wearing the correct size bra?”

It is really important to ensure that you are wearing the correct bra size and support for your body shape. Ideally you should have a bra fitting every 6 months but if this isn’t possible, here are some indications that you may be wearing the wrong bra size:

If your bra straps are always slipping off your shoulders – even after tightening them – you need to be wearing a smaller back size.
If the cups look wrinkled or the underwire is too big you need a smaller cup size.
If you breasts are bulging out, the underwire is cutting into your skin or the centre piece is standing away from the body, you need a bigger cup size.

The purpose of the bra is to bear the weight of the breasts which when unsupported may cause back, shoulder and neck pain and can also lead to headaches. When wearing the correct bra and providing support to your breasts, you will achieve a more slender figure.
“Which fit effect do you want?”

When purchasing lingerie – especially for a particular outfit – you need to consider which fit effect you should aim for. ‘Four Fit Effects’:

Enveloping Effect – high neckline – Full cup bra
Shaping Effect – T shirts & a variety of necklines – T-shirt bra
Plunging Effect – V Neck top – Push up bra
Uplifting Effect – Squared neckline – Balconette or Half Cup

Bras stretch as you wear them so when you buy a bra, always start on the loosest hook and as it stretches over time you can move to the tightest hook.
Avoid folding T-shirt bras in your drawers as it will damage the cups.
Try to hand wash your lingerie as it will last longer. However if you don’t have time to hand wash it, always use a lingerie bag in the washing machine and set it to the Hand Wash Cycle.
